Arriving in the new Confederate Capital of Richmond, Virginia, war  department clerk John B. Jones quickly staked out prime office space for  the War Department at 1000 E. Main Street. The Richmond Custom House survived the war and was later expanded and  converted into the home of the United States Court of Appeals for the  Fourth Circuit from 1866 until the present.
